SAMHSA Celebrates 20 Years of the Strategic Prevention Framework

October marks Substance Use Prevention Month, emphasizing the critical role of prevention in improving individual and community health. The Biden-Harris Administration prioritizes substance use prevention, highlighted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Overdose Prevention Strategy.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) releases a blog highlighting the 20th anniversary of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF), an evidence-based process initiated by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention in 2004. The SPF provides a five-step model for effective substance use prevention planning and implementation, engaging communities and emphasizing data-driven decision-making. Key features of the SPF include its focus on understanding local needs, fostering community involvement, and promoting cross-sector collaboration. The framework adapts to emerging challenges in substance use and recognizes the impact of social determinants of health.

Our work with the Central East Prevention Technology Transfer Center aligns with these principles, supporting communities in implementing the SPF effectively. By providing technical assistance and training, we help ensure that prevention efforts are sustainable and culturally competent, ultimately leading to improved outcomes and health equity across diverse populations.
